The Areopagus was a place in the NW part of Athens where law cases were debated. Religion was a matter of law for the Athenians. So when St. Paul arrived in Athens, preaching about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 17:16-34), he was brought to the Areopagus to explain himself and to defend his case.
There is mention of Dionysius, known as "the Areopagite" (Acts 17:34). A later writer took this as his own pseudonymn, and wrote mystical treatises in the 6th century.
"Areopagus" means "Rock of Ares" (Άρειος or Areios for Aries, and Πάγος or Pagos for rock).
